The triathlon Gerardmer is definitely a race with quite a bit of TCM history. Noël and Norbert have tamed this beast back in the day when it was still a long-distance triathlon. These days it is no longer a full iron distance, but with a 1900m swim in the crystal clear and icy Lac de Gerardmer, 94.5km cycling across nine Vogezen cols with 5.700 altimeters in total, finished off by a 21km run around Gerardmer lake (also not a flat course) – is still no mean feat. Intrigued by the stories we’ve heard, Wouter K., Melissa and I decided to participate this year. Noël came along to support the team along the race and give us useful tips from his experience. And what a great race this is! I can say at least three things about it: 1) the most beautiful tri I have done so far; 2) the best organised race I have done so far; and 3) the most difficult tri I have done so far...

Lac de Gerardmer is crystal clear, and it is a spectacular sight when the 1,500 swimmers enter its waters simultaneously in one wave in the golden autumn morning sun. But it is also very, very cold (by the time I exited the water I had numb toes...). The bike section is maybe the most famous part of the race, featuring electrifying atmosphere with spectators forming tunnels for the athletes on some of the climbs like in the Tour de France, mesmerising sights across the Vogezen mountains, cycling past windstill lakes with mirror reflections of the autumn mountains and blazing fast descents. The run was quite a surprise, because we expected the laps around the lake to be a flat course – but it was nothing like that. When we eventually crossed the finish line, we were all exhausted, but happy and all had decided that we’d be back! We finished the weekend with some great Alsacian Wine and Food. A great TCM trip and certainly not the last!
